What Are American Interns Doing
December 30th, 2010 by dee
Interns are very common in America. Both private enterprise and government bodies receive interns, and there are also many interns come in and go out in the White House and Capital Hill.
There are internship programs in American universities. And internship is bi-directional-colleges have to find their students internship, and the employing units are willing to provide internship for students, so many colleges and employing units build up partnership.
American undergraduates always enroll for Internship Program in their school, and their college will act in their own capacity to find employing units. Internship is a win-win affair, for the company, they can find manpower without spending too much money, and for undergraduates, attending the internship provided by enterprises or government, they can not only get credits, learn about the society, but also learn practical skills, accumulate work experience to get ready for entering society after they graduate.
So what are American interns doing? It is impossible in reality like the intern in Legally Blonde who can take the spotlight and replace famous lawyer to win important lawsuit as soon as she began her internship. That kind of intern is just a legend of Hollywood.
In reality, the interns cannot learn to meet practical needs and give play to what they have learned once they are in the internship positions. Intern is always a nobody in the bottom most of the company, and both the boss, supervisors and laborial staffs can give order to you.
In our company, the most common hearing in the intercom is “I need an intern to run an errand”. The errands of intern include buying coffee, lunch, transmitting letters, samples, purchasing goods. In office, interns have to file documents, copy papers, send e-mails, and sometimes, they do some mechanical data-in service on computer. Interns get low or no payments.
Why do American undergraduates accept jobs without salary? First, school list internship as required course, for example, constant internship for 12 weeks can gain 3-4 credits. On the other side, the job market situation recent years for American undergraduates is severe. American job market always loves people with experience, and there are many unemployed people who have work experience finding jobs, so it is hard for newly graduates competing with them. So, more and more undergraduates try to get internship chances no matter pay or not. They take internship for accumulating work experience and win points for their resumes. There are some lucky guys that are hired during their internship, and a job is waiting for them when they graduate.
There are two girls in our office who have been a regular workers already. One becomes a full worker because of her “personality charm”. This girl learns sociology. She comes to our company to do odds and ends, anyone who is busy can ask her for help. And the fat girl is open and outgoing, sociability. And she has known everyone in our company in only a few days. She is also full of energy and has good lungs. Our boss and ministry of personnel are both love this girl, so they hire her as a full worker with well reason. Although she gets an unfancied job, she is cheerful. Because this job can provide her with 30 thousand income a year which can help her finish her study.
The other girl is the best intern in our company because of her hard-working. She is polite and graceful. Although she is from a rich family, she does anything others tell her to do nicely, even physical work. One day, she was arranged to destroy documents stale dated, and she moved all these documents to a storeroom without window or airconditioner and worked there for 2 days because she is afraid of the noise will disturb others. She is also cheerful, confident, and she is respectful to everyone in the office. She asks for advice modestly for her practice teaching report. Leaders and colleagues like her very much. When the internship was over, everyone was sorry for her leaving. Our boss said if she didn’t need to go back finishing her study, he Will hire her immediately.
From the two cases, I think the most important characters for interns are work attitude and personality. You might be high-spirited and vigorous and full of ambition, but you have to get ready for starting from the bottom most. You should be modest, friendly, careful. People who are unwilling to do tiny things and cannot handle great things will find no way in American companies.
